Planning key to having a safe long weekend

Tuesday 5 March, 2024

With the Labour Day Long Weekend approaching, people are being urged to play it safe around lakes, dams, and reservoirs.

In each of the past two years, Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) has had more than 40,000 people visit its storages over the Labour Day Long Weekend.

GMW’s storages have varied recreational offerings, including swimming, boating, fishing, and camping.

Recreation and Land Officer Chris Braden said regardless of which activity people were undertaking, it was important they did some simple preparation for their trip.

“People should check the GMW website before their visit to see what activities are permitted at different storages, and if there are any specific rules at the storage they plan to visit,” he said.

“If you are going boating, be sure to let someone know where you plan to go and when you expect to return. Also ensure you have all the necessary safety equipment with you, and that your vessel is in working order.

“It is also a time of year when blue-green algae blooms are quite prevalent, so be sure to check our website to see where there are warnings in place.”

Temperatures are likely to be quite high over the Labour Day Long Weekend. Mr Braden said this meant there were other factors people should consider.

“Our storages are fantastic places to visit when the weather warms up,” he said.

“Often, when it’s warmer, visitation will increase, so people should have a backup plan in case the car park or campsite they want is already full.

“Whether you are heading out on the water or staying on the land, remember to be sun smart and protect against mosquitos.

“If you prepare ahead, follow the rules, and are mindful of those around you, then you’re well placed to have a brilliant long weekend.”
